About the Manager
In 1964 at Madison Square Garden, the New Balance White Marsh store manager, Charlie Messenger, while attending Kenwood High School in Baltimore, Maryland, ran the 2nd fastest High School Indoor 2 Mile run ever with a time of 9:10.6.
In 1966 and 1967 he and teammate, Tom Donnelly, lead Villanova University to two consecutive NCAA Cross Country titles. In 1968 he and his Kenwood High School and Villanova University teammate, Dave Patrick, were on a World Record setting indoor two mile relay team and in June of that year Charlie finished 6th in the NCAA 1500 Meter run with a time of 3:42.4.
After graduating from Villanova, Charlie was drafted and selected to be the Assistant Track Coach at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado from January 1969 to October 1972. During that period, he competed in four World Military Cross Country Championships and two World Military Track Championships in Europe and Africa. Charlie also was on two USA Cross Country Teams in 1969 and 1970, competing in Clydebank, Scotland and Vichey, France. In 1971, he set an age group American Record in the 6 mile run at the Drake Relays with a time of 27:47.6.
In 1990, Charlie was inducted into the Villanova University Athletic Hall of Fame. To top that, Charlie was selected in 2002 to be inducted into the State of Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame for his past accomplishments.
Charlie Messenger currently trains and competes in local and statewide events with the NCR Trail Snails of Baltimore, Maryland. The group's motto is "We're behind you all the
way!" Charlie has recently been running in marathons, diligently training with his group, and enjoying injury-free outings.
